February 2021 – This very rare 41-Star US Flag is over 130 years old and was found in a cupboard in a church basement in Salamanca, NY. In 2009, it was presented to the Salamanca Area Historical Society Museum so that it could be properly curated, preserved, and put on display to the public. Thanks to the Museum, and the trust that they placed in New York Frame, this historic flag has now been professionally framed in a museum-grade preservation case, and is ready for the museum to proudly place on display for all of Salamanca’s locals and visitors to enjoy. The 41-star flag is one of a very few that were created when Montana became the 41st State of our Union, on Nov. 8, 1889. However, these flags only remained current for 3 days, before Washington State was admitted on Nov. 11, 1889. It is believed that there are likely only 4 or 5 other 41-Star flags like this one that are still in existence. The flag is expected to be placed prominently on display at the Salamanca Area Historical Society Museum during the spring of 2021. At New York Frame, we are proud that the Museum invited us to provide our expertise in Preservation Framing of Historical / Heirloom Artifacts and Artwork, in order to protect this unique part of our national heritage and our country’s history. The massive 74x84in wooden preservation frame was custom-milled in house from premium-quality American White Oak boards, which were stained with a Walnut Danish oil to enrich the appearance of the natural wood grain. An internal American Basswood spacer was then installed to sit between the exterior frame and the flag. The flag was mounted onto muslin fabric over an acid-free archival backer board, and a breathable water and insect barrier was installed onto the exterior back face. This flag support assembly was then fitted into the frame. 3/16in Optium museum-grade acrylic was selected for the front surface glazing, and a rubber gasket tape was installed between the frame and the acrylic glazing. A custom-milled white oak hanging system was then built to properly support the entire frame.
