YORK Corporation Historical Evolution
1874 - YORK Manufacturing Company is founded in York PA, producing washing machines, corn planters, and water wheels
1881 - YORK's catalog expands to include steam engines & boilers
1889 - YORK introduces its largest ice-making machine
1890 - YORK's Thomas Shipley standardizes the measurement of a unit ton of refrigeration
1908 - YORK Manufacturing Company wins a highly publicized contract with Eastman Kodak
1914 - YORK installs a revolutionary 'comfort system' in the Empire Theater, Montgomery AL. - one of the first installations of "air washing" and ventilation that eventually became known as air conditioning
1924 - YORK begins an ice and cold storage plant for American forces in Europe. San Joaquin Light & Power (Fresno, CA) installs YORK equipment to become the world's first air-conditioned office building
1927 - York purchases the Artic Ice Machine Company, consolidates many of its subsidiaries and sales offices, and is renamed the YORK Ice Machinery Corporation or (YORK Co)
1930 - The DuPont Company develops non-toxic and inflammable Freon-12, which leads to explosive growth in the air conditioning industry
1935 - YORK develops the first single-room air conditioner
1935 - YORK changes its name from the YORK Ice Machinery Corporation to YORK Corporation
1946 - YORK shifts to post-war peacetime production and targets the food freezer market
1949 - YORK debuts the Model 450 Automatic Ice Maker for hotels, restaurants and hospitals, and the concept of "ice cubes with a hole" is introduced
1953 - YORK employees develop a modulated temperature control device, later known as the thermostat
1955 - YORK is Purchased by Borg-Warner
1956 - YORK releases the Turbomatic Compressor
1965 - YORK is selected to air condition the Kennedy Space Center's Vehicle Assembly building
1979 - YORK introduces the Turbo-Modulator first variable speed control for centrifugal chillers
1986 - YORK is spun off as an independent company YORK International
1995 - YORK is recognized by the EPA as a Charter Partner in the Energy Star Program
2005 - YORK is acquired by Johnson Controls to access commercial and residential HVAC markets
