This nhn Emphysema Guide includes information about Emphysema that is written primarily to help Emphysema Patients better understand their condition and the range of Emphysema treatment options that are currently available:
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center lists the most common symptoms of Emphysema, including:
According to the Mayo Clinic, Emphysema patients may have this lung disease for years without noticing any signs or symptoms during their normal activities. However, the most common symptom of Emphysema is Shortness of Breath (Dyspnea), which usually initiates gradually and, in the early stages of the disease, is mostly noticed during exercise or other physical activity. As the disease progresses into it's later Stages, Late-Stage Emphysema patients may eventually feel breathless even while they are completely at rest.
Since Emphysema patients typically also suffer from Chronic Bronchitis they usually also experience the Symptoms of Chronic Bronchitis. These diseases of the respiratory system are now grouped together under the term Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
COPD patients also suffer with sporadic Acute Exacerbations, which are episodes (that may last for several days) when their COPD symptoms become much more severe. Exacerbations are typically caused by (bacterial and/or viral) infections, or by exposure to irritants.
See also COPD Symptoms and the COPD Symptoms FAQ Section which covers frequently asked questions about Shortness of Breath, Wheezing, and Coughing.
Symptoms such as shortness of breath or fatigue are not easily measured or quantified. Many patients ignore the first signs of these COPD symptoms, dismissing them as a due to "smokers cough" or "being out of shape". However, Emphysema symptoms are not usually experienced until severe lung damage is present and, unless steps are taken to prevent further damage, the symptoms will worsen with continuing exposure to lung irritants.
Spirometry is a quantitative clinical test that your physician can use to measure your Lung Function. In fact, a Diagnosis of COPD cannot be made by your physician unless spirometry data confirms that you have a Persistent Limitation of Airflow.
