Does YOUR Business Need A Web Site That Actually Generates $Money$?

YOU are in business to make money - so shouldn't YOUR web site be a profit center in YOUR business?

Many business owners start off believing they can put up a pretty website and then sit and wait for the money to roll in..... Only to find frustration, because on the web if you build it they will NOT come!

Most take the next step and try advertising their website in the media - on billboards, in print, on TV & radio, and even using Pay-Per-Click in the search engines. They learn that advertising can definitely bring in some Internet traffic, but most often it does not do enough to bring in leads or increase sales. And it's expensive, especially over time, so the net effect is a drain on the bottom line. Have you got this far only to be discouraged and finally give up on making your website an EFFECTIVE profit center?

How To Turn Things Around - A Two-Step Overview
Step 1 - Identify The RIGHT Traffic - Getting thousands of people to visit your site will never help if they are the wrong people. Your mission is to get the RIGHT people to visit you online - Pre-Qualified visitors who NEED what you have to offer and are ready and capable of taking action to do business with you!

So who are these people and how many of them are there? The answers can be found using Keyphrase Research. Competent keyphrase research can identify the major keyphrases that people use in the search engines when researching to solve their problems and make purchasing decisions. It can also define the number of people searching on each of the important keyphrases related to your business on an average day.

Competent keyphrase research should be the foundation of your Web Marketing Strategy. You want to get your website in front of those searchers who are ready, capable and willing to do business with You. These are the RIGHT target market.

Step 2. - Give Your Visitors What They NEED - Your website must be focused around providing to your target market's NEEDS. Your shallow brochureware, laden with features and benefits, will probably not be enough. Give them real content that helps them solve their problems, builds your credibility, and makes it easy for them to fulfill those NEEDS by doing business with You.

Lets consider these steps in more detail:

1. How To Get The RIGHT Audience - Keyphrase Research Is Critical
Your Web Marketing Strategy should be focused around the RIGHT keyphrases that Your specific target market are actually using in the MAJOR search engines. In particular, you will see increased conversion from:

  • End Of Sales Pipeline Keyphrases - Example 'realtor' is used by people wanting to find a Realtor, whereas 'real estate' is more often used by people who are earlier in the pipeline, browsing for houses. Here we consider a visitor using 'realtor' to be more qualified to do business.
  • More Specific Keyphrases - Example 'amherst ny realtor' vs 'realtor'
  • Start by listing all keyphrases related to your business then expand them by using a thesaurus to define all related phrases that your target market may be using. This is the most critical component of developing an EFFECTIVE website, and it may be worth outsourcing this part to a competent professional. A web marketing consultant can help you define the RIGHT keyphrases, show you how many people are searching on those keyphrases on an average day, and even help you define which keyphrases you have a chance of gaining top page ranking for in the major search engines.

Earning high ranking on the search engine 'Organic Lists' will require Search Engine Optimization (SEO) of your website pages and, for the more competitive keyphrases, you'll also need properly structured incoming hyperlinks from other relevant websites.

If you can't earn your way onto the top search engine results pages in the short-term, you may need to buy your way in using Pay-Per-Click Advertising. Regardless of how you get there, it is critical that you have the RIGHT page content - focused around the RIGHT keyphrases. If you don't you'll just waste a lot of money!

    2. How To Compel Your Website Visitors To Take Action

To fulfill YOUR needs, your website content has to COMPEL your visitors to take action and do business with YOU.

Visitors with a NEED (a 'must have') are more likely to take action than visitors with a WANT (a 'nice to have'). Address the NEEDS underlying your visitors WANTS, and you'll increase the likelihood of them taking your desired action. If you have the RIGHT target market visiting your website and have content that fulfills their NEEDS you are well on the way to success.

So why would a visitor elect to do business with You? Let's list some NEEDS- and WANTS-based driving forces for website visitors to take action:

  • They NEED to remove pain / settle fears / improve their quality of life
  • They may NEED a product or service that makes life easier or safer
  • They may NEED to improve their health status or improve their image / appearance
  • They often NEED to save money or make more money
  • They often NEED to save time
  • They may NEED to make a process more efficient
  • They may NEED education
  • They may WANT or NEED something to differentiate themselves
  • They may WANT to satisfy a curiosity or NEED to prove they are right about an issue
  • They may WANT specific brands (driven by ego, prestige, or trust) or NEED specific brands (driven by particular available features / benefits).
  • They may WANT fun or entertainment
  • There are of course many other NEEDS- and WANTS-based driving forces for visitors to take action, You must define the most powerful NEEDS applicable to your target audience. Then You need to clearly demonstrate that Your product or service will remove their pain / settle their fears / improve their quality of life. Once you understand Your specific target markets' particular NEEDS you'll find it much easier to present your solutions to them in the most appropriate way. Focus on providing a strong reason for them to contact you or buy now and your copy will be much more compelling.

Once you've compelled them to take action you must make it easy for them to do so. Give them lots of ways to contact you and don't make them hunt all around your website to do so. If it's an e-commerce site, link directly from your NEEDS-based informational content to relevant items in your online catalog, and provide links to related items that they may also need. Make sure your shopping cart is simple to use with the minimum possible number of barriers, like online forms.

A Question That Will Increase Your Sales

Learn a simple five-word sentence that gives you an almost unfair advantage in boosting your response, outselling your competition and triggering an ongoing stream of creative breakthroughs.

Asking this simple question is the easiest way to get yourself and your staff to think outside the box. It can literally make you wealthy and establish your reputation as a marketing visionary with a Midas touch.

Here's the question: What are we really selling? Just five little words. But let's explore their power.

For example: You are NOT selling grass seed - You are selling a greener lawn. You are NOT selling boilers and BTUs - You are selling warmer, cozier winter nights at a 27% fuel savings. You are NOT selling baseball tickets - You are selling memories of sunny afternoons that a father and his children will cherish forever. So think for a moment...What are You really selling?

Are you sure? What else could it be? How might you repackage your product, or add to it, to trigger new demand or crack open a whole new market? Think big!

Starbucks sells more than coffee. Disney World sells more than rides. Ask "What are we really selling?" often enough and I guarantee this - bold new answers will arise and with them, major opportunities to open new markets and explode your response.

So How Does YOUR Site Measure Up?

If your site can't be found by the RIGHT people then you are lost before you start. And if you only focus on talking about YOU, no one will stay long enough to give you any consideration. Give them what they NEED, and make it EASY for them to do business with YOU, or you'll make very little money from your web site.

Does Your site fit into this INEFFECTIVE category? Well over 90% of web sites do. If you have a web referrer log, inspect it and you'll see the message loud and clear. Did you get enough visitors? How did they find you? Did your visitors stay long enough to read your page content? Did they follow your planned selling sequence onto other pages? How many actually contacted you about anything, or took any sort of action that you wanted?

While you read this, YOUR web site is costing YOU time and money. In fact, most companies spend anywhere in the range US$2,000 - US$100,000 annually on web sites that simply cannot generate any return. This is not just an affliction of e-Commerce web sites. All e-Business web sites should have solid business objectives that leverage their brand to increase profitability. Does Yours?

Aren't YOU in business to make money? Even schools, and not-for-profit organizations can use EFFECTIVE web sites to make money. So Why Don't YOU?

Do YOU Want An EFFECTIVE Web Site?

  • That provides valuable information, and builds credibility
  • That builds Your brand so that you can earn money from it
  • That builds customer loyalty
  • That encourages visitors to let you know what you're doing wrong
  • That achieves basic marketing principles - solving a problem for a specific target audience
  • That generates its own income, just like any other successful profit center in your business

If you are in business to make money then there is no doubt that you need one. But do you want one?
    You can have one!.....

So How Can YOU Create An EFFECTIVE Web Site?

If Your web site doesn't achieve the following important business objectives then you must question - why?

  • Generate Positive Net Revenue
  • Serve The NEEDS Of The RIGHT Visitors For You To Leverage Business
  • Collect Useful Information From Visitors
  • Allow For Simple Feedback and Complaints From Visitors

This process isn't about communicating information that YOU think you want your visitors to take away. It's about researching what they really want and providing that to them. And since your visitors needs keep changing it's an ongoing job - so you'll need to continue providing new expert information that they value in order to build a relationship with them and retain their interest over time. When you do this you have now got time on your side.

Web Sites Should Be Designed For The Target Market - Not The Business Owner

Your web site is a marketing tool so you must use the principles of marketing to build and promote it. To make it fit your business objectives you'll have to identify your target audience(s) on the web, be found by them, and solve their problems.

Most web sites are INEFFECTIVE fashion items that have no business-related objectives and no target audience. Forget fashion. Understand and deploy the basics of Web Marketing and communication, or if you can't - get someone who can to help you! Otherwise you'll just keep doing what well over 90% of web sites do - Nothing Profitable!

Are You Losing Money Because You Don't Know How To Evolve An EFFECTIVE Web Site? The first step to turning YOUR web site around is to develop the RIGHT Web Marketing Strategy for YOUR business.
